Huawei gives Australia peeks at its network hardware and code to regain trust

Huawei denied the Sydney Opera House in Australia

Huawei has had an image problem lately among countries skittish about trusting a Chinese telecom giant with the backbone of networks that its home government might like to snoop. The company's Australian chairman John Lord thinks that's just paranoia, and he's planning radical transparency in the country to recover what trust he can after Huawei lost a National Broadband Network deal. The firm is willing to give the Australian government "unrestricted" access to both networking hardware and source code to prove that there's no espionage afoot. Lord even likes the idea a domestic inspection agency that would greenlight equipment across the industry. All of the proposals represent a one-way conversation, however -- Canberra hasn't said if it's receptive enough to drop the cold attitude. There's a distinct chance that any successful return to favor wouldn't come soon enough to recover the most lucrative contracts, which could make any Australian change of heart a Pyrrhic victory.

Do Married People Have More Wisdom About Relationships ...

Do Married People Have More Wisdom About Relationships? by Myne White(f): 4:20pm On Oct 22When I tell people that I write romance novels or that I blog mostly about issues in relationships, the next question from some of them is whether I'm married and for how long. I am sometimes tempted to answer in the negative to hear what they will say, but the replies when I answer truthfully gives me a pretty good idea.

The assumption is that I should know what I'm talking about since I'm living it. But is it really true that married people have more wisdom about relationship matters?

It's all tied to intelligence or should we say aptitude. Some people are just poor learners and may be married for 30 years and still give terrible relationship advice or how do you explain married mothers who encourage their daughters to marry dying old men instead of a young suitor that is responsible and caring. #Justasking.

To answer ur question: YES!
WHY? because what u dont have, u cant give, how and what are u going to tell smbody who is having issues to settle with her hubby, when u dont have any experience to share, so in my own opinion, i think married pple are more experienced in relatnship matters than singles.
There was a time,(b4 i got married), dt i was a sunday school teaccher, on a particulr sunday, d topic we will have teat had to do with marriage,i walk straight to d pastor to inform him dt i could not teach d topic, because i wasnt married, he wanted to force it on me, claiming dt i was intelligent, but i declined outrightly.

There is no guarantee. Wisdom is from God. It's like saying the elderly are wiser because of their age. Age is nothing but a number. They may have more experienced than singles but it doesn't make them any wiser. That's why you see people divorce more than once . You can tell they haven't learnt anything from their previous mistake.

I don't know if wisdom is the right word to use! I would've prefer saying knowledge. And when I say knowledge, that simple mean knowledge of each other not every marriage out there. I have said this in few threads about relationship and am saying it again, No two marriages or relationships are the same! Even if you both/guys are a set of twins. What works for your twin sister or brother might not work in your own marriage/relationship. Study your partner and know what they like or dislike and when there's problem, let others including family be your very last option. Things that worked for your parent or friends might even cause you more problem if you implement them in yours!

Marriage is like love.. Has no set in stome manual for how it is supposed to work..

No two marriages are the same..

Re: Do Married People Have More Wisdom About Relationships? by honeric01(m): 4:25pm On Oct 23The OP should change the "wisdom" to "experience".

For now, i don't have any long comment but i should say:

WISDOM is a rare commodity and whether being single or married does not give you access to it.. only few are wise.

But experience can only be gotten from those who have walked the walk or those who have walked along with those who walked the walk.

For where, for the mere fact that you are married does not equip you with more wisdom on relationship, you may have some experiences above someone not married, but most times married people still engage in many 'illicit acts' not expected of them, so where is the wisdom?

If i need advice on Marital issues, i would be confiding with couples whose marriage has been tested over the years and have matured into it, am talking about old couples with huge experience.

The married fool may not have started that way, he may have been turned from a brilliant young banker/fast rising businessman to a broke, sacked, disgraced, bitter ex convict and drunk fool by his nagging wife.

You have to listen to the married fool before you end up like him!

In addition to the above comment, the guy probably can count how many times he had spoken to or been in the present of the girls parents during those 10yrs not to talk of spending a week or a month under one roof with each others family or parents. In other words, you can date for 10yrs and not have the experience of those married for 10 months!Re: Do Married People Have More Wisdom About Relationships? by byvan(f): 9:33pm On Oct 23Re: Do Married People Have More Wisdom About Relationships? by Johndoe100(m): 11:01pm On Oct 23

Children, children, children. Why of course teenagers and people in their twenties have infinitely more wisdom than their elders. Is it not our tradition to turn to the young and inexperienced when we are troubled or in need of advice? My people have seen the error of their ways and have wisely replaced the council of elders with the council of youngsters.

Same neurons at work in sleep and under anesthesia

Anesthesiologists aren?t totally lying when they say they?re going to put you to sleep. Some anesthetics directly tap into sleep-promoting neurons in the brain, a study in mice reveals.

The results may help clarify how drugs that have been used around the world for decades actually put someone under. ?It?s kind of shocking that after 170 years, we still don?t understand why they work,? says study coauthor Max Kelz of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

Most neurons in the brain appear to be calmed by anesthetics, says neuropharmacologist and anesthesiologist Hugh Hemmings Jr. of Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City. But the new results, published online October 25 in Current Biology, show that two common anesthetics actually stimulate sleep-inducing neurons. ?It?s unusual for neurons to be excited by anesthetics,? Hemmings says.

In the study, Kelz, Jason Moore, also of the University of Pennsylvania, and colleagues studied the effects of the anesthetics isoflurane and halothane. Mice given the drugs soon became sleepy, as expected. Along with this drowsiness came a jump in nerve cell activity in a part of the brain?s hypothalamus called the ventrolateral preoptic nucleus, or VLPO.

Not all neurons in the VLPO are the same. Some are involved in kicking off sleep, while neighboring neurons don?t seem to play a role. The anesthetics affected only the VLPO neurons that promote sleep, Moore and his colleagues found. When the scientists destroyed VLPO neurons, the mice were less sensitive to the effects of isoflurane. These animals needed higher doses of the drug to make them groggy, suggesting that this particular spot in the brain is important for anesthetic effects.

The drugs in the study aren?t commonly used in the United States but share similarities with anesthetics that are. There?s some evidence that propofol, the anesthetic that Michael Jackson co-opted as a sleep aid, may activate the same population of sleep-inducing neurons, says Kelz.

Even after finding this direct link between natural sleep and being under anesthesia, Kelz says it?s clear that the two situations are different. ?Despite what we tell our patients, anesthesia and sleep are not at all the same,? he says. ?They are really distinct states.??

But understanding how the brain turns off ? as it does each night during sleep or under anesthesia ? may lead to a clearer view of some of the deepest mysteries about the brain, such as how the brain generates consciousness.

And the finding could help scientists design better anesthetics. ?The drugs that we have are fraught with side effects that we?d like to eliminate or avoid,? Hemmings says. Studies like this one, which clarify how the brain responds to anesthesia, will point out which brain changes are important and which are side effects, he says. ?It?s hard to have designer drugs without knowing what they?re designed to do.?

Ahead of the Bell: Netflix to review 3Q showing

(AP) ? Netflix will update investors on the growth of its Internet video service Tuesday when the company releases its third-quarter earnings report.

The results, due out after the stock market closes, cover Netflix's performance from July through September. That's when it's usually more difficult for Netflix Inc. to attract and retain subscribers because of summer vacations and longer daylight hours.

Netflix began the third quarter hoping to pick up between 1 million and 1.8 million U.S. subscribers to its $8-per-month service that streams movies and old TV series to devices with high-speed Internet connections.

If the subscriber gains fall on the lower end of that target, Netflix will likely have to revise its ambitions for the full year. Netflix set a goal in add 7 million streaming subscribers in the U.S. this year. A change would probably trigger another sell-off in Netflix's stock, which has fallen by 78 percent from its peak price in the past 15 month. The shares closed Monday at $67.88.

Netflix needs steady growth in its U.S. business to help finance an international expansion. The video- streaming service debuted in Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Norway last week. Netflix also sells streaming subscriptions in Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland and dozens of Latin American countries.

The push outside the U.S. resulted in a rare first-quarter loss earlier this year and depressed second-quarter earnings.

Analysts polled by FactSet expect Netflix's third-quarter earnings to plunge more than 90 percent from last year to 5 cents per share. Third-quarter revenue is forecast to climb 9 percent to $905 million, based on analyst projections.

The big question hovering over Netflix now is whether the video licensing and marketing expenses piling up outside the U.S. will saddle the company with another loss in the fourth quarter and lead to its first annual loss in a decade.

Judge questions WTC blame of United in September 11 case

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A U.S. judge on Thursday questioned whether United Airlines could be held responsible for suspected airport security lapses that allowed hijackers onto the American Airlines plane that slammed into the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

Thursday's hearing before U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein in Manhattan stems from one of the few remaining lawsuits arising from the hijacked plane attacks, which killed more than 3,000 people in New York, the Pentagon outside Washington, and Pennsylvania.

While most of the cases have settled, Larry Silverstein, the leaseholder of the World Trade Center property, is pursuing negligence claims against United Airlines, now United Continental Holdings Inc, and American Airlines. Silverstein says they should both be held liable for loss of property and business.

Silverstein's World Trade Center Properties is seeking additional damages beyond what he has already received from his own insurer. The hearing on Thursday dealt only with claims over the destruction of 7 World Trade Center, a building just north of the World Trade Center site that also collapsed in the attacks.

Silverstein argues that United is responsible for suspected security failures that resulted in the hijacking of American Airlines Flight 11, which slammed into one of the towers.

Those failures, the court heard on Thursday, began very early in the morning of September 11, 2001, when hijackers Mohammed Atta and Abdul Aziz al Omari set out on their trip.

That morning, Atta and al Omari boarded a US Airways flight from Maine's Portland International Jetport to Boston. From Logan International Airport, they connected onto Flight 11, which they commandeered and crashed into the World Trade Center.

Silverstein argues that because United was one of the carriers that operated Portland's only security checkpoint, it is responsible for the screening of all passengers that passed through it, regardless of what flight they are ticketed for.

United "had to be really vigilant when it did the screening," World Trade Center Properties attorney Richard Williamson told the court. "The first line of defense was Portland.... They were just asleep at the switch."

But Hellerstein appeared skeptical.

"Would I be acting inconsistently if I did not dismiss United?" the judge asked, referring to a 2009 order in which he dismissed claims against other airlines for damages caused by United Flight 175, which also crashed into the World Trade Center.

United urged Hellerstein to follow his own logic.

"The duty is to the passengers on our flights," United attorney Jeffrey Ellis told the court.

Hellerstein said he would reserve decision on whether to grant United's bid to dismiss the damage claims over 7 World Trade Center and the American flight.

Judges often do not rule immediately from the bench, preferring to study the issues especially if they are complex.

Silverstein's 2008 lawsuit also named aircraft manufacturer Boeing Co, the Massachusetts Port Authority, which manages Logan International Airport, and security companies as defendants.

He is seeking $8.4 billion in damages for loss of property and lost business, even though Hellerstein has limited the amount to the $2.8 billion Silverstein paid for the leases.

In August, Hellerstein denied the airlines' motion for judgment on whether $4 billion that Silverstein recovered from his insurers more than compensated for the potential damages recovery of $2.8 billion against the airlines, saying it was an issue for a jury to decide at trial.

The attacks prompted the creation of the U.S. Transportation Security Administration, which now oversees security at airport checkpoints.

Hellerstein, who sits in a courthouse less than a mile from the World Trade Center site, has presided over almost all September 11 litigation. Many of those lawsuits, including cases brought by relatives of those killed, people left injured, first responders, cleanup workers and businesses, have been settled.

The case is World Trade Center Properties LLC. et al v. American Airlines, Inc. et al, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, No. 08-cv-03722.

(Boston) - In a commentary to appear in the Oct. 22 issue of the journal Pediatrics, Barry Zuckerman, MD, the Joel and Barbara Alpert Professor of Pediatrics at Boston University School of Medicine, discusses how by working together, lawyers and physicians potentially can close the gap in health disparities that persist even in universal health care coverage.

While the relationship between poverty and poor health is complex, access to basic needs like adequate housing and nutrition, appropriate education and personal safety is well documented to improve health trajectories.

According to Zuckerman the article by Beck, et al in Pediatrics represents a special example of how a multidisciplinary approach to social determinants of health initiated from a primary care setting can address poor housing conditions and reduce risk for asthma for individual patients and for a population. "When families do not receive the benefits or protections of certain laws, their health can be undermined. The consequences can be treated medically, but their upstream causes are social and are more effectively addressed using legal strategies," said Zuckerman.

A recent report estimates that 50 to 85 percent of health center users between 10 and 17 million people experience unmet legal needs, many of which impact their health. Most at-risk individuals may not know that their problems have legal solutions. Medical-Legal Partnerships, founded by Zuckerman at Boston Medical Center in 1993 for children, helps parents navigate the complex government and legal systems that often hold solutions for many social determinants of poor health.

"The health care team's role is to identify early unmet legal needs that cause or exacerbate child health problems. Once identified, lawyers bring critical skills to complement the expertise of the health care team," explained Zuckerman.

By reducing the impact of legal determinants that affect health, this creative partnership in clinical settings will compliment increased access to health care provided by recent health care reforms.

(AP) ? A Wisconsin man who had been accused of domestic violence and slashing his wife's tires took a gun into the spa where she worked Sunday and shot seven women, three fatally, before killing himself, a police chief said.

The shootings set off a confusing, six-hour search for the gunman that locked down a nearby mall, a country club adjacent to the spa and the hospital where the survivors were taken. The search froze activity in a commercial area in Brookfield, a middle-to-upper class community west of Milwaukee, for much of the day. Ultimately, he was found dead in the spa.

Authorities said it would take time to sort out exactly what happened, and emphasized they were still interviewing witnesses and rescuers and did not have a firm timeline of events. At a news conference Sunday night, Mayor Steve Ponto called the shootings "a senseless act on the part of one person."

The chaos started around 11 a.m. at the Azana Day Spa, a two-story, 9,000-square-foot building across from a major shopping mall. The first officers on the scene found the building filled with smoke from a fire authorities believe was set by the suspect, Radcliffe Franklin Haughton, 45, of Brown Deer, Brookfield Police Chief Dan Tushaus said.

They also found a 1-pound propane tank they initially thought might be an improvised explosive device, Tushhaus said. That slowed the search of the building as law enforcement agents waited for a bomb squad to clear the scene.

Tushaus said later that police didn't know whether the gunman brought the propane tank to the spa or it was left by a contractor.

The search also was complicated by the layout of the building, with numerous small treatment rooms and several locked areas, Tushaus said. While officers initially thought the gunman had fled the building, they later found his body in one of the locked areas, he said.

The bodies of the victims were also found in the spa. Tushaus said investigators were still working to identify them. He said the four survivors were between the ages of 22 and 40. He didn't know if they were employees at the spa or customers, and it wasn't clear if the man's wife was among the victims.

Haughton had recently been arrested after witnesses identified him as the person who slashed his wife's tires, police said.

He appeared in court Thursday. A four-year restraining order was issued, and Haughton was ordered to turn any firearms over to the sheriff's department.

Haughton's father, Radcliffe Haughton, Sr., spoke to a television station and The Associated Press shortly before police announced that they had found his son's body. In telephone interviews from Florida, he said he had last spoken to his son a few days ago, but didn't have any indication anything was wrong. He begged his son to turn himself in.

After learning of his son's death, he said only: "This is very sad."

A sea of ambulances and police vehicles collected at the scene shortly after the shooting. A witness, David Gosh of nearby West Allis, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel he was returning from duck hunting with his father and a friend when he saw a woman emerge from the spa, screaming, as she ran into traffic.

"She ran right out into the street was pounding on cars," Gosh told the newspaper. Moments later, a man with a handgun ran out. He appeared to be chasing the woman but then went back inside, Gosh said.

At the hospital where the victims were taken, staff members were escorted inside during the temporary lockdown and critically injured patients were accepted with a police escort. Officers were stationed at entrances.

The hospital released a statement saying two women had undergone surgery, and one was in critical condition. Another was expected to have surgery Sunday night.

The shooting investigation and manhunt paralyzed a normally bustling shopping district. Inside the mall across the street from the spa, people waited patiently for updates. Gina Kralik, a bartender at Red Robin Gourmet Burgers, said people had been allowed to leave at one point but then police had decided not to let anyone come or go from the mall.

"We're just sitting watching the news and also trying to find out what's going on," she said about 3 p.m.

Austin Della, 17, was working at a department store in the mall when he heard announcements over the loudspeaker asking people to move their cars out of one parking lot. The mall was then locked down for almost three hours, he said, and customers joked about the good service they would get as the only clients in the store.

"Everyone was really calm," Della said. "If not for all the announcements, I don't think anyone would have known that anything was happening."

It was the second mass shooting in Wisconsin this year. Wade Michael Page, a 40-year-old Army veteran and white supremacist, killed six people and injured three others before fatally shooting himself Aug. 5 at a Sikh temple south of Milwaukee.

The shooting at the mall took place less than a mile from where seven people were killed and four wounded on March 12, 2005, when a gunman opened fire at a Living Church of God service held at a hotel.
