Two games launch with Tango support: Candy Brick Breaker and Jetpack Jinx

It?s been quite a while since we talked about Tango, the voice, video, and text messaging app for iOS and other platforms. Since then, the Tango service has expanded to include photo sharing and even games.? The first of those games launched this week: Candy Block Breaker from Gameloft and Jetpack Jinx from Bubble Gum Interactive. Both are free to play.

Do you need download the Tango app in order to play games ?for Tango?? Not at all. It seems that games for Tango basically just use Tango for their social features, like many games do with Facebook. You can play Candy Block Breaker and its brother without ever touching Tango. But if you have a Tango account, you?ll get friends list integration and messaging, milestone sharing, and the ability to play asynchronously through messaging.

Candy Block Breaker

Gameloft?s Tango contribution is a casual puzzle game, sort of like their popular Shark Dash. Players slide a small island back and forth at the bottom of the screen, using it to bounce a colorful mustachioed animal around the playing field and break bricks. Only instead of plain old bricks, you?re breaking big pieces of candy.

Brick breaking isn?t exactly the most hardcore genre out there, but Arkanoid-style games tend to have a more serious visual style. Candy Block Breaker?s cheerfully sweet visuals should help it appeal to ?wider audiences such as the instant messaging crowd.

Jetpack Jinx

The endless jumping game was popularized by Doodle Jump, so much so that it?s now a very crowded genre. Jetpack Jinx turns that style of game on its head slightly by replacing jumping with jetpack flying ? just like Halfbrick?s Jetpack Joyride did to the endless runner genre.

As with other games of this type, the goal is to get the little flying monster guy up as high as he can go. Tilting the device left and right steers him around. As you fly around, you?ll collect countless shiny gems that can be used to purchase power ups in the game?s store. Some of these allow the protagonist to fire lasers at enemies or ?Hulk out? and become invincible.

It takes two to Tango

Tango?s content platform, which just launched a few weeks ago, is the company?s attempt to transition from messaging into its own entertainment ecosystem. The combination of messaging and gaming clearly appeals to Gameloft, who announced an ongoing partnership with Tango. Game developers who?d like to try Tango integration as well can head to Tango?s website and sign up for the SDK.

China to adults: Go see your mother or go to jail

Grown children in China must visit their parents or face fines or even jail, according to a new law that went into effect today.

Grown children who do not visit their aged parents often enough could be fined or even jailed, according to a law that went into effect here?on Monday.

Exactly what ?enough? means is not specified in the law, which will make it hard to enforce. But the legislation underlines how radically China?s modernization and its ?one-child policy? have transformed the country over the past 30 years.

Market reforms have contributed to the breakup of the traditional extended family, as more and more young people leave their hometowns to seek work, and population-control efforts mean parents have only one child to lean on when they are older.

More than 194 million Chinese are over 60 years old, according to official figures. By 2030 that figure will have almost doubled.

China?s parliament amended the Law to Protect the Rights and Interests of the Aged last December, in the wake of a spate of reports about neglected old people. Still, the new wording does not make it clear how often adult children are expected to visit their parents, nor how punishments for offenders will be calculated.

The law ?is mainly to stress the right of elderly people to ask for emotional support,? one of the drafters, law professor Xiao Jinming told The Associated Press. ?We want to emphasize that there is such a need.?

The law met with much criticism on the Internet, where social media platforms are largely populated by the sort of young people who do not have brothers and sisters to share the financial and emotional burden of caring for their aging parents, few of whom have any kind of pension.

For them, the topic is of red-hot relevance. Nearly 17 million people posted comments on the Twitter-like Sina Weibo site. Zhou Simiao spoke for many when she wrote that ?visiting parents is a moral problem rather than a legal one. I can?t return home once a year since I work in Tibet. I can only say to my mum in Liaoning, ?I am sorry mum. Your daughter is an outlaw.??

Mayor Alvin Brown has raised $259,000 for re-election

Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown has racked up $259,000 after four months of fundraising for his 2015 re-election run, according to reports released this week.

But local political expert Matt Corrigan said the sum, while credible, isn?t guaranteed to scare off a viable opponent.

?I think it?s enough to give someone pause about challenging Brown,? Corrigan said. ?But it?s not enough to completely cancel out the possibility of a credible challenger.?

So far only one other person, Tiffany Wingo, has filed to run and that individual hasn?t raised any money.

Brown said Thursday there?s a lot of time until 2015, but he isn?t focused on raising money.

?I?m very happy and honored for those who have written checks to support my re-election for 2015,? he said. ?But my top priority is retirement reform, balancing the budget, attracting people to come here to live, work and play.?

Brown has received about 700 contributions. In the first quarter, he got money from members of his own staff, Jaguars owner Shad Khan, business leaders like Steve Halverson and Peter Rummell, and a host of law firms and businesses.

In the most recent quarter Brown received contributions from former Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver and business leader John Baker.

So far, Delores Weaver, Wayne Weaver?s wife, a vocal supporter of Brown during 2011, is absent from the current donor list.

The last mayor seeking re-election, John Peyton, started collecting money for his 2007 re-election in October 2005. Brown started in fundraising in March.

Peyton was able to raise nearly $862,000 in just three months, three times the amount Brown has raised in four months.

Corrigan, a professor at the University of North Florida, said Brown being a Democrat and his early start on fundraising are factors in the disparity between Brown?s total and Peyton?s.

About $167,000, or 65 percent, of the total Brown has raised came from donors with Duval County addresses. Another $56,150 came from donors with other Florida addresses.

Of $36,000 in contributions from outside Florida, some of the largest amounts came from people with addresses in Washington, D.C., Atlanta and Chicago. Most of that came in the last quarter.

Brown said his fundraising to date says nothing about his support in the community.

?It has no reflection on whether or not I have the support,? he said. ?The most important day is on election day. I?m very optimistic about the future of Jacksonville and I plan to be in this position for eight years.?
