Thanks for stopping by my blog to follow the adventures of my year back in school.? It?s been a busy week and I?m still stressing about Sunday?s. Seven years worry how I was going to cover the rooms or if we were going to loose some kid at the hotel (in the early days)? and apparently that?s a stress habit that won?t die quickly.? I?m sure I?ll adjust soon enough.
Thought I?d update anyone who?s reading this with my classes for this fall. I spent a few days- and a small fortune on books- getting my schedule for the year lined up.? And thankfully it came together very nicely.? I?ll only have to drive to Pasadena once a week this quarter.?? Yeah!!? I was worried it might be 2 or even 3 days and that would have been a lot.? One day and at a good times for both the trip up and back is doable and will get me out.
So this fall quarter I?ll be taking four classes although one is only a 2 unit class.? They are listed below with the descriptions of what they?re about.
CN568: THEOLOGICAL & PASTORAL PERSPECTIVES ON THE CONTEMPORARY FAMILY . Olive M. Fleming Drane, Affiliate Instructor in Evangelism.
DESCRIPTION:? This online course in practical theology examines perceptions of the family within the Christian tradition and their relationship to wider cultural concerns in a variety of different historical and contemporary settings.
?
ET501: CHRISTIAN ETHICS. Laura Rector.
DESCRIPTION: This introductory course in Christian ethics seeks to shape Christian disciples for moral engagement by emphasizing the concrete meaning of Jesus? teachings and actions for Christian living. It does so by developing the critical thinking skills used in moral analysis and by teaching a method that encourages repentance, personal and communal growth, and compassion for others? suffering. The class follows an agenda set by the Sermon on the Mount, covering contemporary social issues.

MD575: Childhood in Global Perspective: Foundations for Mission with Children at Risk Desiree Segura-April, Assistant Professor of Children at Risk
DESCRIPTION: This course examines variables that influence the way children and youth are viewed, treated, listened to, parented and discipled as they grow up in contemporary societies and an increasingly globalized world. It draws from theological, anthropological, sociological, and cross-cultural psychological perspectives. It explores cross-cultural understandings of children and youth, multi-cultural child development, listening and relating to children and youth, cultural stories of children and childhood, and social and political implications for child development, behavior and relationships. Missiological implications for mission and ministry with children and youth, including those at risk, are discussed.

GM506A: FOUNDATIONS FOR MINISTRY A . Michael McNichols and Stephen Summerell
DESCRIPTION: The purpose of this course is to identify and develop central themes related to the practice of ministry and to develop basic skills in theological reflection as a mode of learning. In this course, ministry is understood in its broadest New Testament sense as the service of the gospel, and therefore includes ordained and non-ordained, paid and otherwise. Each student will be expected to work with these themes in ways that fit his or her own context and call. During two quarters the course will interweave the topics of practical theology, congregational formation, spiritual formation, and missional formation. All three topics will be addressed as matters of both personal and corporate identity and agency. The Fall quarter will first give attention to matters of both personal and relational formation then address the missional formation of the church. In the small groups, various practices and disciplines of spiritual formation will be engaged. Also, self-awareness will be resourced through a personality inventory.

With approximately 1500 pages to read for each class along with papers, projects, retreats, and group interactions, I think I?ll stay busy.
Would love to hear your comments-even a Hi, if you stop by this page.
Blessings,
Charles
