I?ve talked to dozens of aspiring consultants and freelancers who delay, hesitate, and sometimes never start their business because they believe they have to be an expert to be a consultant or freelancer. WRONG.
You do NOT need to be an expert to have a profitable consulting business.
This isn?t a scam, and I?m not telling you to misrepresent yourself to clients. On the contrary: you should always be honest and act with integrity in your business?that?s how you build a sustainable, profitable business. But, you don?t need to be an expert.
Now, in the video, I talk about the 2-part secret to creating a profitable consulting business (and expertise isn?t part of the secret).
I also give a couple examples of why expertise is NOT necessary, and how I?ve been able to create value for clients, which they?re happy to pay for. If you?re a regular reader on this blog, you probably know that I work with law firms, automating and customizing software (you can also check out an interview where I talk about my work, and how I made the switch from employee to consultant). Although the work I do is technical, I don?t consider myself a software developer or software engineer, and I?m not an attorney. In fact, I don?t even have a degree in a technical or law-related field (I have a Bachelor?s in psychology and a Master?s in, um, recreation?yes, there is such a thing).
So why do I have clients? Why are law firms happy to pay me to do this kind of technical work for them? Why would anyone pay me $175/hour (my current rate) to do stuff for them?

The myth of having to be an expert is just one misguided belief that stops a lot of people from starting their own consulting business. But there are lots of other myths and misguided beliefs that could just as easily stop you from taking action to create your business and begin down the road to changing your financial future.
